Sergiev Posad is a very unusual city. It is at the same time the spiritual center of the Russian state, a symbol of the Orthodox faith and a monument to the national history of the XIX — early XX centuries.
The traditional medieval history and topography of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra is well known, it roams from textbook to textbook and has managed to turn into an apocrypha.
On the other hand, this fascinating history is full of white spots: the life of this settlement outside the church walls in the 18th-19th centuries, the ups and downs of the patriarchy in the last 50 years of the Russian Empire, the Soviet “Zagorsky” period, finally the modernity, in something more fascinating, than gray old.
We will walk around the center of the city, the Lavra and take a look at a couple of seemingly inconspicuous corners of the old town.
