On a day tour from Marmaris, you will visit Pamukkale, a place known as the eighth wonder of the world. This natural formation, whose name means "cotton castle" in Turkish, is famous for its thermal springs and travertine terraces of carbonate minerals formed by water flows. Because of its famous white travertine and historical value, Pamukkale was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites in 1988.
Pamukkale can be seen from the hills on the opposite side of the valley in the town of Denizli, 20 kilometers away. On top of this white "castle", which measures a total of about 2,700 meters long, 600 meters wide and 160 meters high, was built the ancient city of Hierapolis. Here you will find an ancient Roman amphitheater, a historical museum (which served in the past as a Turkish bath), Cleopatra's ancient pool, the monumental tomb of St. Philip and the majestic necropolis of Anatolia.
