We will start at Oktogon square and continue down along the most opulent stretch of Andrassy avenue, discussing the scandalous or/and tragic stories behind almost all of its buildings, among them:
Love and cabaret shows in the time of Holocaust (a tragic issue, but as you will know, tragedy is a common background for all things Hungarian);
A brief affair between the Hungary’s greatest poet (and the greatest drunkard) and a sphinx;
Matters of entrepreneurial wisdom and carelessness.
Our next stop will be St.Stephen basilica and there we’ll talk about:
The beginnings of the Hungarian state and why the Hungarians left behind land so rich in oil and gas;
Who this St.Stephen was and why there is such a huge church in his honour;
What was the role of wild boars in European history.
We will walk to the Freedom square where you will know:
Why the Angel’s holiness is questionable at best;
Where the Hungarian Bastille once stood;
What an American general is doing here.
On to the Parliament. Main questions:
Where are its chimneys?
Who was the Hungarian king who wore a dress on a daily basis?
What are those bullets stuck in the wall? (This question is a serious one)
We will cross to the Buda side via the Chain bridge, and I will tell you:
A story of a count who had had enough of it all.
A story of one time the bridge wasn’t blown up and of one time it was.
A couple of legends, debunking them right away.
While we walk up to the castle we will see:
The hotel where The Queen staid when they had their first concert in the Eastern block;
A failed XIX century entertainment centre (nice opportunities for selfies);
An old Turkish cemetery.
Our final destination will be the Fisherman's bastion but before that we’ll talk about quite a lot of things. Among them:
What were the two sieges of Buda, and what remained after that (a tragic one);
Who the so-called Matthias church is dedicated to in fact;
Why it’s a bad idea to smoke on your balcony while sitting on a horse.
