Berlin is a city of a long and rather uneasy history. Over the centuries, the turns of fortune have made it a city of great cultural, scientific, and political importance, and along with that destroyed it nearly down to rock bottom.
This tour is about the versatility of the German capital. By exploring stories and noticing details we will discover the very special character and beauty of the city. Its landscape is a patchwork with endless elements, layers and stories carefully stitched together to set the unique atmosphere of Berlin.
We will learn that the city has always been a city of migrants, why is it a city without a historical centre, and how it survived three changes of a political regime in only 40 years.
What we will see:
— Historic Potsdamer Platz is known today for its modern architecture. But we will also find one (and a half) pre-war building there.
— The Cathedral that hosted the secret sermon by Martin Luther King in the Eastern part of the divided city.
— We will visit the Old Town and learn that it is actually a restored historic quarter, only a small part of which is truly authentic.
— Hackesche Höfe — the largest single courtyard complex in Germany, since 1905 charming with its Art Nouveau facades.
— We will also dive into the history of rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, have a look on the ruins of the Esplanade Hotel, that hosted Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo, and the building of the Nazi’s Ministry of Aviation. In addition, we will see the famous TV-tower, the churches of St. Mary and St. Nicholas, and many more.
— I will be happy to recommend you good restaurants and interesting cultural spots.
